Catching Nostalgia - Remembering Way Back When

Some of my most favorite memories of my Grandfather were made out on a lake in his bass boat. We would go all over the country and fish different lakes in other states. From fishing up rainbow trout in Blue Mesa, Colorado to trying for bass at Flathead Lake in Montana, we fished wherever we could. Most of our time was spent out on the lake that my grandpa held dear: Brownwood Lake. 

One of the rituals was the food we took to eat while out on the lake. My Papa Carl, as all of us grandchildren called him, loved to eat Vienna Sausages and have Spam sandwiches. I, on the other hand, was never too keen on either one of them, so I always chose what I considered the lesser of the two evils and ate the Spam. Normally, I would just nibble until I had eaten enough that I felt polite enough to say I was done. 

Later on Out on the Lake

One time, we were trolling the bayou around Brownwood Lake and we stopped for lunch. I was a teen, at the time, and I had developed my own sense of taste. Spam just wasn't part of that development. We had picked up some speed and I saw an opportunity to spare myself the flavor of another congealed meat sandwich. I tossed the whole thing in the water. My grandpa noticed how About two hours later, however, We were at a crappie fishing spot and, lo and behold, an open-faced version of the sandwich I had tossed came floating by. It was in that moment that I realized even fish won't eat it...

My grandpa looked at me and told me that I could have just declined the Spam. I felt sheepish, especially after I found out he always kept peanut butter with him!

Needing a New Boat
