Getting your boat ready for the winter

Fuel Treatment

You should use a stabilizing fuel treatment for your engine. You will want to add the fuel to your tank and run the engine for around 10- 15 minutes to ensure that the additive is thoroughly circulated through your engine. The reason you want to add this to your boat's fuel system is so that deposits do not end up clogging up your lines and what not. You could be in for a difficult time if you do not do this and it could end up costing you a pretty penny. 

Drain your Engine

If you have an inboard or sterndrive system, you will want to locate your petcock valves and pump the water out of your engine. If you don't drain the water, you run the risk of the liquid freezing and damaging your block. If you have an outboard engine, they should drain themselves so there is no worry. 

Cylinder Fogging

You will want to coat your cylinders with fog spray to coat the engine and protect it when it sits for extended periods of time. Hook up your muffs and a hose to provide water for your engine and then spray the solution directly into the air intake. This action will help prevent corrosion from forming as your boat sits until you use it again. You will most likely see smoke as you spray the fog since most fogs are wax based oils. 

Change your Oil

You should change your oil when you get ready to but your boat up for winter so that any moisture will be reduced or eliminated. This will once again help prevent corrosion to the inside of your engine. You can have it changed for you and depending on how busy the tech that changes your oil is, you may be able to get them to drain the gear case lubricant.
